A New Moon Celebration: Dancing Like We’ve Never Danced Before with DJ Shanaynay

Everybody showed up Wednesday (11/11) knowing it would be dark by the time we got out of class, even darker than it was already getting at a quarter to 7. Former den mother and DDPP Chicago co-founder Jenn Brandel noted that it was a new moon, and that she received an internet alert that advised her to dance. Thankfully, Wednesday’s playlist was provided by DJ Shanaynay, who kept our spirits up with these totally tubular hits of the 80s and 90s that demanded some cuttin’ loose on the dance floor:

1 Ooh Child  The Five Stairsteps
2 I Wanna Dance With Somebody  Whitney Houston
3 Groove Is In The Heart Dee Lite
4 Pump Up The Jam Technotronic
5 September Earth Wind and Fire
6 Delirious    Prince
7 We Got the Beat The Go-Go’s
8 Jump (For My Love) The Pointer Sisters
9 P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)    Michael Jackson
10 The Girl Is Poison    Bel Biv Devoe
11 It Takes Two    Rob Base
12 Finally    Ce Ce Peniston
13 Age Of Consent    New Order
14 Maniac    Michael Sembello
15 Cool It Now    New Edition

When Maniac came on, I was tempted to pull the chair in the corner over and reenact that scene from Flashdance, and for about two seconds I considered pouring my water bottle all over myself for added cinematic effect.

…And whatever happened to the guy who wrote Maniac, anyway? Michael Sembello if you must know. Apparently he has been very busy introducing “a new genre of music called ‘Bossa-Soul’ based off of his West Coast soul sound.” You’re welcome!
